Our Team

We’re building a lab where everyone feels welcome, supported, and valued. At LEIA Lab, we believe science is stronger when it brings together different voices and perspectives. Our team is collaborative, passionate, and with strong work ethic, about using spatial intelligence to make a positive impact for people and nature. Ho Yi Wan, Ph.D.

LEIA Lab Director and Associate Professor of Landscape Ecology, Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, University of Florida.

Ho Yi joined the University of Florida in 2025 after serving as an Associate Professor (2024–2025) and Assistant Professor (2020–2024) in the Department of Wildlife at Cal Poly Humboldt. His research integrates landscape ecology, informatics, and artificial intelligence to examine how environmental change shapes biodiversity, ecosystems, and human wellbeing. He leads international collaborations and develops open-source tools to advance conservation, resilience, and sustainability. He is also the founder of SpatChat, an open platform that uses conversational AI to make ecological modeling accessible.

Amida Verhey

M.S. Student

Amida (Ami) grew up in Lake County, CA, and earned a B.S. in Environmental Science and Management with a concentration in Ecology, Biodiversity, and Conservation from UC Davis. As an undergraduate, he studied how urban development and coyote interference competition affect gray fox space use in the Santa Monica Mountains. Ami worked with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on Lake and Streambed Alteration permitting across the Bay Area and Greater Los Angeles. His thesis research investigates how the Dixie Fire influences interactions among mammalian carnivores in Lassen National Forest, with the goal of identifying mechanisms that shape wildlife responses to fire. Outside of research, Ami enjoys exploring nature, mixing music, sharing good food, and gaming with friends.

Deirdre Replinger

M.S. Student

Deirdre is originally from Portland, Oregon, and completed her undergraduate studies at University of Montana. Inspired early on by Jane Goodall, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in wildlife biology. As an undergraduate, she gained experience across diverse projects—from plant genomics to moose habitat selection—but always intended to return to the Pacific Northwest. She later spent three years contributing to the long-term demography study of northern spotted owls in the central and southern Oregon Cascades, where her interest in old-growth conifer specialists deepened. Building on these experiences, her master’s thesis examines how marten and other species respond to the Dixie Fire through occupancy studies in Lassen National Forest. In her free time, Deirdre enjoys hiking, backpacking, and exploring the beauty of old-growth forests.

Quinlan House

M.S. Student

Quinlan is a dedicated researcher with a background in Wildlife Conservation and professional experience in student mentorship and medical administration. He earned his B.S. degree from Cal Poly Humboldt. For his M.S. thesis, Quinlan studies the interactions between spotted owls and barred owls, with the goal of understanding competition and coexistence in changing forest ecosystems. Outside of the lab, Quinlan enjoys fishing, hiking, camping, and building community as a former club president with the Humboldt Catholic Newman Center.
